At the BMCC, we realize that bariatric surgery is a commitment. It takes time and dedication. Many of our patients fly in from out of state, which means handling logistical concerns like hotels and finding a place for family to stay.
Our goal is to make the process of bariatric surgery, both before and after, as simple as possible for you and your loved ones. We want to provide strong support to patients at all stages of their journey. With that in mind, we’ve developed a variety of patient resources that make patients’ pre- and post-bariatric surgery lives easier.

What Should I Expect?
Patients should usually plan to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights after their surgery. We also ask that patients flying in from out of state stay in town for at least 10 days after surgery. Sometimes complications take a few days to appear, and this extra stay—as well as the hospital stay—ensures that our weight loss surgery team is nearby and available to help in the event of any complications or problems.
You should also expect to take about 2 weeks off of work in order to get used to the steady, consistent effort that staying hydrated requires. You can learn more about what to expect on our Pre-Bariatric Surgery Planning page.
Support Groups
We’ve worked to develop a strong set of support groups for you to join. Our support groups meet monthly, and you’ll have the floor to speak to others who have shared your struggle in a positive, nurturing environment. Support groups are an excellent opportunity for patients to share their experience and help each other along, because you’re all walking a similar path. Many patients report that their support group feels like a second family.
We do a number of creative things with our support groups, like guided shopping tours to help you find low-fat high-protein meals to help you lose weight. You can find a list of upcoming events on our bariatric resource page.
