Our bariatric surgeon

Dr. Josh Long is a double-boarded bariatric specialist, with certifications in bariatric surgery and in bariatric medicine from the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM). He has gained national recognition as a bariatric physician, serving as a national bariatric surgical program site reviewer for the MBSAQIP and is currently participating as a co-author for the national obesity algorithm. He has also served as a national guest speaker on various surgical topics.

As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Long is a perfectionist. His patients have exceptionally low complication rates*. Dr. Long also enjoys investing in patient relationships, which has consistently translated into excellent patient experience rankings.

Innovative surgery

Dr. Long is an innovator as a bariatric surgeon. He completed his surgical residency and minimally invasive/bariatric surgical fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a leader in innovative minimally invasive and bariatric surgical training. During his tenure he participated in the development of novel laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques. While there he also mastered laparoscopic and single site approaches. He skillfully uses a full spectrum of bariatric surgical procedures, including the sleeve gastrectomygastric bypassbariatric revision surgery, and advanced endoscopy.

At Parker Adventist Hospital, Dr. Long collaborated to pioneer the loop duodenal switch (SADI-S) as a more effective alternative to the gastric bypass. He continually looks for more effective surgical and non-surgical approaches, and has moved away from the LAP-BAND® because of its high international 5 year removal risk (25-40% in most studies) due to foreign body complications and ineffective weight loss.

Total body wellness

At the BMCC, we recognize that bariatric surgery is a powerful tool for weight loss but not a panacea. That’s why in addition to our careful and individualized surgical partnership, the BMCC has assembled a comprehensive team and approach to meet your patients wherever they are and to help them lose weight, keep it off, and regain their quality of life*.

Our team works closely with patients both before and after surgery to craft an individualized dietary, behavioral, and exercise plan to specifically match their needs. We have a bariatric dietitian, a renowned bariatric exercise team, and we work closely with a triple-boarded endocrinologist (Sharmini Long, MD). Our bariatric counselor has helped many patients to overcome psychological barriers and build the internal motivation needed to maintain life-long benefits.*

Our monthly patient support groups facilitate a safe environment to discuss shared issues and to help each other to stay on track. Many patients report that these groups feel like a second family.

Our team is deeply committed to your patients’ long term success, and we work to partner with them and with you every step of the way to maximize their post-surgery outcome.
