Self-Pay For Bariatric Surgery: Your Questions Answered

You’re considering bariatric surgery, and you’re considering the self-pay option. What are the benefits of self-pay surgery, and is it right for you? In this blog post, we’ll answer a few common questions about self-paying for bariatric surgery.

Can I Pay For My Own Weight Loss Surgery?

Yes, and many of our patients do. This is called self-pay (or cash-pay), and it can be a great option even for patients who already have insurance with bariatric benefits.

Self-paying for bariatric surgery gives you more freedom to choose the doctor who is right for you, rather than having to pick from a small list of hospitals and bariatric surgery centers that are in-network. It also gives you more freedom to select the type of weight loss surgery that you and your doctor feel will give you your best opportunity for lasting weight loss; unfortunately, some insurance providers will only cover specific bariatric surgeries. Self-pay is a great option if you want to get your surgery faster, because you are not restricted by sometimes lengthy insurance mandated pathways. Lastly, if you don’t have an insurance that contains bariatric surgical benefits, self-pay may be your only option.

How Can I Afford Weight Loss Surgery?

Some patients worry that if they don’t go through insurance, then they won’t be able to afford bariatric surgery. But the truth is that bariatric surgery can be a very affordable option. Many bariatric surgery centers and not-for-profit hospitals offer cash-pay prices that are designed to be within your budget. Going through insurance can add a lot of overhead expenses, and without those overhead expenses weight loss surgery costs less than many patients expect. At the BMCC we have some of the lowest out-of-pocket surgery costs in the Denver area, often by thousands of dollars and we work with centers that include the highest possible value for patients in grouping costs into one transparent price.

Here’s a cost breakdown for the different weight loss surgeries that we offer at the BMCC.

The bottom line is that bariatric surgery is an incredible health investment that you can make in yourself. If you know you want bariatric surgery, then you owe it to yourself to not let the financial aspect stop you. Many of our patients have found it more effective to think in terms of “how can I afford bariatric surgery?” rather than “can I afford bariatric surgery?” This is an important difference because no matter how much money you spend, you can’t buy health. For this reason, many of our patients feel that they can’t afford not to proceed with a surgery that can transform and restore their health.

Are There Payment Plans for Weight Loss Surgery?

Some bariatric surgery centers offer payment plans for weight loss surgery, but these plans can sometimes trap patients. Many medical lenders charge very high interest rates, which can cause patients a lot of financial hardship down the road. For this reason, we don’t offer payment plans at the BMCC.
